EHS40 issue - sound quality (cracking) and losing USB connection
Tried to post this as a reply to the other EHS40 thread, but my post got refused with a message that is was detected to be spam. Well, it is not. Let's try a new thread.

I have a similar issue with a EHS40 on a T58, a bit similar to what is described in the other thread. Initially, everything works. However, after a while (one or more days), the sound quality through the headset deteriorates (cracking noise) and/or the headset stops working completely.

If you then remove the EHS40 from the phone (disconnect USB) and reconnect it again, the adapter is no longer recognized. You need to disconnect it both from the phone /and/ headset to get it to work again. It seems that it requires a full reset at that point, and that leaving either the headset or phone connected keeps power on the EHS40.

I've tried resetting either the phone or the headset when this occured. Both have no impact. Only a complete disconnect and reconnect of the EHS 40, both from phone (USB) and heatset (RJ45) does the trick.

Some other observations: if I connect the headset RJ45 first, prior to having the USB plugged into the phone, the headset adapter is /not/ recognized. Only doing it the other way around works (USB first, then RJ45 to headset). Might this be a dual-power or grounding loop design issue? Power and ground both through USB from the phone and from the headset?

If the headset is unpowered, there is no issue removing and plugging the EHS40 jack into the phone. It is recognized each and every time. With the headset power connected, disconnecting USB and immediately replugging it fails 100% of the time.

If I remove the EHS40 from the phone and connect it to my USB power meter, I see a residual voltage of about 0.2V, declining to 0V in about 10 seconds. Seems to be a cap discharging. If I reconnect the headset adapter after the cap has completely discharged, it is recognized by the phone, even though the headset is connected and powered. So the fact that it is not recognized by the phone after disconnecting and reconnecting seems to be that cap that is still charged. But that problem does not occur if the EHS40 is not connected to the headset, or the headset is not powered, even though I still see that cap discharging if I remove the USB connector from the phone and connect it to my USB power meter. Phone is powered through POE.

RE: EHS40 issue - sound quality (cracking) and losing USB connection
I have a Plantronics Savi 8220 and a T46S and I've noticed the same issue with the EHS40. I came from an EHS36 and didn't have any issues until I upgraded to the EHS40. At first, it seems to work ok, but after an undetermined amount of time, the sound quality deteriorates and sounds tinny and crackly. The other person can hear me fine, so it's just in the headset that the quality is diminished.

I also noticed that after a reboot of the phone, the EHS adapter no longer is recognized by the phone on the status page.

If I disconnect and reconnect the EHS40 from the USB port of the phone, then it is recognized and shows up in the status page. The audio quality is also restored again until the next time it goes bad.

I don't think Yealink cares for their customers in any way. Never had any response to support requests, nor any response from Yealink in this thread.

I finally solved this by buying a Plantronics USB adapter, the APU-76 (ASIN B07GC6PFYD / EAN 0017229125742). It's about $40 and works without any issues.

Does the APU-76 plug straight into the Yealink phone's USB port and you get call notifications and can answer/end calls from the headset? I noticed that the APU-76 also has the busy lamp jack so this would work better for me, than the EHS-40, if that's the case.

Yes, it plugs in exactly as the EHS-40 does, but actually works without issue. Have logged hours and hours of calls on this combination of APU-76 with the T58 without any issue. Call notifications and answering/ending calls works exactly as expected and no sound quality problems whatsoever.

Thanks for the info. It's too bad Yealink never responded. I can't return the defective EHS40 and will be getting the APU-76 instead.

I can confirm. I've been using the APU-76 for the last day and it works flawlessly. I can reboot the phone and the adapter is still detected by the phone. The difference is that the adapter is powered by the base station, rather than the phone, and so it stays powered on when the phone is rebooted.

After several weeks, I've had no issues with the APU-76. I can now also use the call busy indicator from plantronics which plugs right into the APU-76. Anyone want to buy an EHS40 for half price?

RE: EHS40 issue - sound quality (cracking) and losing USB connection
Just to add to the conversation, I have a couple people using the EHS40 to connect Jabra Engage 65 headsets to T55A phones. It works fine, including RCC etc, but then suddenly no audio on the headset. Disconnecting the EHS40, waiting a good 10-15 seconds has (so far) corrected it, but thats not a long term solution.
