T42S unable to update firmware - brianstoiber - 08-24-2022 03:15 AM

I have multiple T42S SIP phones. They were on an old firmware version (66.83.0.30) and needed to upgrade them as I am moving our service to 3CX. I need to get to 66.86.0.5.

I have been able to upgrade the firmware to 66.84.0.35 but I can't get them any farther than that. Every time I try to upgrade them, I get an error saying

Update failed(-5)

or they will say

Firmware updating...
Do not power off!
Unable to complete.
Will try again now!

Any help on what I need to do?

Hi,

Please reset the phone to factory default and try again.

I have already tried that. I think I need to remove the MAC from the current provider so that it doesn't automatically try to provision itself as soon as it is powered on.

Maybe?

I tried to update a T42S from 66.85.0.5 to 66.86.0.15 using web interface.
I followed the steps bellow:

1. download 66.86.0.15.rom file from Yealink web site
2. select downloaded file after clicking over Browse button
3. click over Update button
4. observe a message like Updating firmware over phone's screen

After 15 minutes, I pulled the phone patch cord and replugged it: it restarted with 66.85.0.5 version.

1. Which 66.86.0.x version shall I target first ?
2. Which 66.86.0.x version shall I target after the first one reached ?

Hi,

The steps you are taking are good.
Devices with v85 firmware can be upgraded directly to firmware v86.

After the firmware upgrade is complete, you may want to check that the phone actually has the latest firmware before removing and reconnecting the phone patch cord.

If the phone contains the correct firmware before the restart, the problem lies in a remote firmware update via RPS that provides the device with the older firmware v85 again.

How long should an 85 to 86 upgrade last ?
I aborted mine after 15 minutes or so as usually, an upgrade takes 3 to 5 minutes.

Replying to myself, using a provisioning server where I copied the firmware file, i could positively upgrade my T42S phone to v86.
The whole process took around 3 minutes.
What instantly changed is:
- I could see file downloading progress (10 to 20s)
- then the usual message warning against unplugging the phone.

Strange.
Thank very much complex1 for your help.

Good to read that you were able to upgrade the firmware.
