Can you upgrade a normal IP T58A to Teams or does it need to be a Skype for Business model?

I think you can. We purchased base T58A's off of Amazon that came with the basic SIP firmware. We replaced the firmware with Skype for Business, and we have tested Teams (though based on our needed features it's not ready for prime-time yet).
You'll just have to download and install the appropriate firmware, it seems (plus, get a license).

I did exactly this, but it's quite disappointing. No contacts are available. It's very limited in almost every way. It's essentially like the android client but without any of the other android apps that make the client useful.
I would suggest you look at going with the Skype for Business firmware for now.
