I have seen both firmware.url or static.firmware.url used in auto provisioning templates.
Is there a way to know which variable is to be used?
Does this vary by phone or firmware version?

In old version of firmware (before x.80.x.x) used firmware.url. In new version of firmware (older than x.80.x.x) used static.firmware.url
Static method used in common.cfg file and not static in mac.cfg.
