Multicast / Paging / Intercom - Yealink T58 - Ryandh - 09-01-2017 08:35 PM

We are wanting to have an intercom / paging system with our phones. We have Vonage Business, and although they have been able to get the feature to work on the phones in their lab, they have not been able to get the mutlicast / intercom feature to work on the phones in our office.

I have reviewed the manual, played with the settings for hours, but just can't get it to work.

Version
Firmware Version 58.80.0.10
Hardware Version 55.2.3.0.0.0.0
Network
Internet Port IPv4
IPv4
WAN Port Type DHCP
WAN IP Address 172.17.0.21
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 172.17.0.1
Primary DNS 75.75.75.75
Secondary DNS 75.75.76.76

These are the instructions I've been attempting to implement.
The multicast paging feature allows the IP phones to send/receive Real-time Transport
Protocol (RTP) stream to/from the pre-configured multicast address(es) without involving
SIP signaling. You can specify up to 10 listening multicast addresses on IP phones.
For the phones to be able to send and receive multicast paging we need to do the following:
•Send Multicast - We will add a Button to send a page.
•Select a Codec - We will use the default Codec G722.
•Receive Multicast - Add the listening address to receive a page.
Please note that this article was written for a Yealink T22P. Not all Yealink support this feature.
Adding a Paging Button (DSS Key)
To configure a multicast paging key (This is to SEND the page) via web user interface:
1.Click on the Phone tab.
2.Select DSS Key.
3.In the desired DSS Key or Line Key select "Multicast Paging" from the Type dropdown menu.
4.Enter the multicast IP address and port number in the "Value" field.
5.Click "Confirm" to accept the changes.
The valid multicast IP addresses range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255 and a port number.
For this example we will be using 239.255.255.255:1008 as the value (#4).
Codec for Multicast Paging
To Configure a codec for multicast paging via web user interface:
1.Click on the Phone tab.
2.Go to Features.
3.Select the desired Codec from the Multicast Codec dropdown menu (keep the default G722).
4.Click "Confirm" to accept the changes.
Receive the Multicast Page
In order to receive the multicast page, the following must be done.
1.Click on the Contacts tab.
2.Go to MulticastIP
3.Enter the listening multicast address and port number in the Listening Address field.
4.Enter the label in the Label field. **The label will appear on the LCD screen when receiving the RTP multicast
5.Click "Confirm" to accept the changes.

For this example we will be using 239.255.255.255:1008 as the listening address - #3 (The same address used to send multicast paging). Configure this setting on all the phones you will be paging. You will then be able to page multiple phones from the phone you configured to page using the line key or DSS Key.

That Multicast address looks pretty suspicious. Try using something in the middle of the range instead of at the very end:
i.e. 224.0.0.124:1008

See if that helps.

I tried the address you sent, and a few others and double checked I had all the settings correct, but it just seems nothing works to get the multicast paging going. It's probably something with the T58 phone given all the instructions for multicast are on older phones.

Any other suggestions?

When you initiate the page does the phone at least look like it's doing something, or does it just fail/sit idle?

If the screen changes to look like it's on a call, try running a Wireshark trace or some other kind of packet capture on the network and see if there are any multicast packets streaming over the network (ones with the address that you specified as the destination). That will at least tell you if the sending side is working.

Once you know if that is working or not you can then focus on the receiving phones and further troubleshoot from there...

It does initiate the phone you are paging from, but the receiving phone never indicates that any page is received.

I've already ran a trace / packet capture with Cisco Meraki on our network and they confirmed that the data was being sent and the data was reaching the port of the receiving phone. I can look for the email with the data / screenshot from Meraki but that was a month or so back so I will have to look for it.

What do you suggest?

Hi Ryan,

Is the receiving phone also T58? Can you try to reproduce and export all the diagnostics file to us for further investigation?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the receiving phone is a T58 as well.

I've attached the packet capture showing the data travel from one phone to port another.

I would be willing to pay someone via PayPal someone to remote in and configure the multicast / paging feature on our phones. This would be a HUGE help if that were possible.

Just let me know, I'd love to get this configuration / situation resolved.

Thanks so much!!

Ryan
