Please don't laugh, because I have no idea how I did this.
but I have lost my master .wav file for our ringtone.
it's OBVIOUSLY in the phones, because it's being used.
does anyone have any idea on how I can somehow download it out of an existing phone so that I can upload to new ones?

Hi,

You can only upload ringtones to your phone, you can not download the ringtones from your phone.
What is on your phone stays on your phone...

Does your phone support downloading ringtones from ringtone websites?
