I noticed in the T38G I have a public hold option. not sure how it works just yet. But i noticed on the T41P there is no public hold function. My guess is it was phased out? or forgotten about? any ever used it?

Shared Call Appearance will use public hold option.
T38G doesn't have broadsoft version and other version.
T41P has broadsoft version and other version. Public hold function will be in the broadsoft version of T4X.

I am very confused what does broadsoft version have to do with the question? are you saying that the Broadsoft version has that function? If so the post I made about firmwares and which version is right for me, using the Broadsoft version is counter that post.
